Make a whole field of colorful yarn flowers with a vintage-style flower loom. Popular in the ’60s and ’70s, these looms often came in kits with yarn to make those beautiful flower afghans you’ve likely seen before. After crochet designer Twinkie Chan placed one of these vintage afghans in the background of her product photos, she was inundated with requests to teach the technique, and that’s how this class was born. Join Twinkie for 15 days exploring the basics of flower looming. You’ll learn about different types of looms, how to make your own, and foundational techniques, including a variety of darning methods to create different flower centers. She’ll also show you how to make the classic two-layer flower seen in vintage afghans, along with two ways to join your flowers—one using crochet and one with a needle. Once you get into the rhythm, you can start experimenting with all kinds of yarns and materials, like raffia and fabric strips. The flowers make super cute hair clips, brooches, and gift toppers—and you’ll have all the skills you need to create that iconic flower blanket.

The granny square sweater is a staple of the crochet world. It’s iconic, it gives the coziest vibes, and it’s approachable for all levels of crocheters. Once you know how to crochet granny squares, turning them into a cardigan is a snap. In this class, crochet designer and author Twinkie Chan teaches you how to crochet a comfy, oversized granny square cardigan that feels like taking your favorite blanket with you everywhere you go. Begin by learning the basic granny square, which is made of double crochet stitches and chains. Then you'll learn two different ways to invisibly connect your squares - the "Join As You Go" method and the mattress stitch – and how to assemble panels of squares into a cardigan. You’ll finish with ribbing on the cuffs and hem. Twinkie designed this cardigan to be long, loose, and slouchy, but the pattern and process are so versatile that you can easily make your cardigan shorter or smaller. You can leave the sleeves free and uncuffed, and you can even swap in any kind of crocheted square that you like.

Crochet designer and author Twinkie Chan shows you two easy ways to turn a hank of yarn into a center-pull ball. While most yarns from big craft stores come in skeins—ready to use with a convenient yarn tail—many yarns from local shops are sold in hanks. A hank is a large loop of yarn twisted into itself, and if you try to work directly from it, you'll quickly end up with a tangled mess. That’s why learning to wind your own center-pull ball is a must.
If there’s one thing crocheters and knitters can agree on, it’s this: weaving in yarn tails is no one’s favorite task, especially when adding new yarn mid-project. In this technique class, crochet designer and author Twinkie Chan teaches four tail-free ways to join yarn invisibly: the magic knot, the weaver’s knot, the Russian join, and the braided join. These methods work best when joining the same color yarn and aren’t ideal for precise color changes in colorwork, but with a bit of practice, you can get pretty close. Each join has its own strengths, and everyone tends to find a favorite. Come discover which one works best for you.
pc – popcorn stitch – work 5 dc into next st, take hook off loop, reinsert hook into 1st dc from front to back, then put dropped loop back on hook and pull through one loop, making sure the popcorn pops out toward you

Gauge: Using worsted weight yarn and H hook, or whatever size hook needed to obtain gauge, 16 sc x 18 rows = 4" x 4"

Pattern for 9" x 7" rectangle:
With White, ch 32.

Row 1: Sk 1st ch from hook, sc evenly across. – 31 sts

Row 2: Ch 2, turn. [3 dc, drop White and carry it along, join Red, pc, drop Red, carry it along, join Green, sc4tog, ch 1, drop Green, carry it along, pick up White] 7 times. Break off Red and Green. With White, 3 dc. – 31 sts (The pc, sc4tog, and ch1 all count as 1 stitch in the stitch count)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Work 1 sc in every dc. When you get to a strawberry, it will look like there are 3 sts to work in: the ch 1, the top of the sc4tog, and the 1st dc of your popcorn stitch, which appears as the only red st on my piece. Work 1 sc in that st, and then continue to work evenly in the dc sts. – 31 sts

Row 4: Ch 2, turn. Dc, [drop White and carry it along, join Red, pc, drop Red, carry it along, join Green, sc4tog, ch 1, drop Green, carry it along, pick up White, 3 dc] 7 times, drop White and carry it along, join Red, pc, drop Red and break off, pick up Green, sc4tog, ch 1, drop Green, and break off, pick up White, dc in last st. – 31 sts

Row 5: Ch 2, turn. Sc evenly across. – 31 sts

Continue to repeat Rows 3-6 until your project is 7 inches tall.

Break off and weave in all ends.
